I remember flying kites as a kid, but that was no where near as fun as flying a kite with Nate and Robert. I think Nate's found a new favorite thing to do out at my parents' house and I am more than happy to oblige.

Kite Flying
I LOVE how the weather is slowly starting to change and we're getting glimpses of spring! Woohoo! I also love where my parents live. It's not too far out of town, but it's far enough out that there aren't a ton of power lines, trees and houses which makes kite flying out there ideal. Nate and I were out there one afternoon last week cleaning out the garden to start planting. The wind was perfect and mom had a really nice kite that was made of cloth and really sturdy. It'd never been flown and she'd had it for a few years in the garage. So, after we worked it was time to play.
We got the kite going and Robert called to say he was headed home and I told him about the kite. He said he wanted in on the fun, too and to wait for him. I don't think he's flown a kite in a long time and he was really excited to share this first with Nate.
You gotta love Grandmas because they follow their roles so well. My mom is an awesome grandma and she takes that job very seriously. I love how she likes to teach my son new things and watch him experience things for the first time. My mom introduced Nate to chocolate milk and ever since that's the first thing he asks for when we go out to visit. She also let him pick out his very first donut and it had mini M&M's on it (is anyone surprised but that??). Grandmas are so much more fun than moms. My mom is the typical spoiler and she was so happy to see Nate cling on to the kite (it was so strong I was afraid it would lift him off the ground). I also loved watching my husband take some time to be with his son. I think it's one of the best things in the world to see a father interacting with his children.
They got the kite pretty high and Nate would shake the spool and make the kite dance. A couple of times when he was dancing with his kite he dropped the spool and the wind took the kite. It was so funny to watch Robert chase the kite down the five acres of my parents' land. My mom got a huge kick out of it and I'd be lying if I said I didn't. Both times Nate dropped it Robert couldn't get to it in time and it landed in the neighbor's cow pasture. Mmmm, fun. We had a good time watching our step as we retrieved it.

It's been a little hairy around here...
This week we have been in desperate need of haircuts. It started with Nate. I hate it when his hair is long enough to cover the tops of his ears. I don't know why but it bugs me. Anyway, Robert is in charge of Nate's haircuts. I'm minding my business doing my work when I hear the two of them snickering and giggling in the bathroom. Of course I go look to find Nate stripped down to nothing covered in hair sporting his new look. It's a Mohawk. I gave Robert a look that said, "Why does my child look like poor white trash?" Robert, in reply, begs me to keep it. "Just until Sunday, please." I acquiesce. For one reason or another our ward has been really outspoken about the Ross hair this year. It might have to do with the fact that the majority of our ward is elderly. Anyway, every week Robert gets comments on his long hair and offers to cut it. I always get comments, too, so I think Robert was just trying to stir the pot. I don't understand why it's an issue for anyone because we are always clean and neat but whatever. Just don't tell on us for being ornery.

So there it is. The Mohawk. It's not even that pronounced. I love to spike it straight up and even Nate is getting into it and asks to do it himself. I took him shopping the next day and got tons of compliments on it. Robert was pretty happy about that. And, just so it is noted, we got tons of compliments from our generation at church and tons of looks and grumbles from the older generation. I guess we got the reaction we were looking for.
On Friday I went to a salon with my sister for a little workshop. They talked to us about ideal haircuts and colors for our faces, waxed our eyebrows and answered all our questions. I never thought I was that bad but apparently I needed a lot of work. I was the first they approached for the eyebrow wax. I have only had it done once, for my wedding, and you'd think I'd said the dirtiest of words when I confessed it. The whole time they were working on them I kept hearing, "These eyebrows aren't for beginners!" I blame my dad. Later I also let it slip that I'd never colored my hair. I've used the kind that washes out after a week, but I'd never been to salon for highlights or color. I'm pretty sure when they all learned that I was quickly labeled the charity case of the night. Don't get me wrong, they were very nice and helpful, but I felt like I should hurry home and hide myself. I'm so sorry I subjected the rest of the world with my ugly mug for so long. Just kidding! I know they were trying to get some business out of me. But seriously, is there really something that wrong with just dealing with what you've been given naturally?
So I caved and made an appointment. I have never been afraid of short hair and I actually love it. Sure, there are days I have wished for pretty waves to frame my face but I love the low maintenance and edginess short hair provides. I LOVE my new cut and the color is barely noticeable which is what I like. I don't like the streaky look. They darkened the whole of it and added just a few honey colored highlights on the top. I had so much fun that I think I'm converted to it. Next time they said they'd go lighter because the warmer months will have hit. I'm excited to see it done that way.
Of course after I got my hair done (Robert says he really likes it even though I know he prefers it long) it was Robert's turn. He's had his hair long for about 2 years now. He started growing it once we got to Chicago. This picture is pretty close to what it looked like most of the time. It was longer a couple of times.
He felt like it was time for a change. Especially when we realized his hair was now longer than mine. He found a cut he liked and headed to the salon.
He came home looking like this. I love it! I can see all his face, especially his eyes, which were hidden a lot of the time. Doesn't he look fantastic! So cute! Okay, I'll stop gushing but seriously, he looks great.
So there you go. New looks all around at our house. It's been fun. Our only regret is that we can no longer torment our friends at church with our hair. Maybe we'll have to keep Nate's Mohawk just to keep them on their toes! :P

Robert's true identity revealed
For some reason, the other day Nate started asking questions about boys and girls. He seemed to be confused who was a girl and who was a boy. So, I started going through members of the family asking him to tell me if they were a boy or a girl. It went something like this...
Me: Grandma is...
Nate: A girl
Me: Grandpa is...
Nate: Boy!
Me: Sydney is...
Nate: A girl!
Me: Maggie is...
Nate: Girl
Me: Jason is...
Nate: Boy!
Me: Mommy is...
Nate: Girl!
Me: Daddy is...
Nate: Spiderman!

I was just as surprised as anyone else. Somebody needs to tell me how Robert ended up with me. What happened to Mary Jane???

Graduate school
I just thought that I would quickly put this on the blog because we've been getting a lot of questions lately. Robert has started to receive reply letters from the schools he applied to for a PhD. We are trying to keep it pretty quiet. Once we've heard back from all the schools we'll make a decision and I will definitely post on the blog where we've chosen to go. We are grateful for any and all prayers in our behalf on this matter. It's a big moment in our lives and we are so grateful to all the family and friends who have supported and continue to support us.
